What Is a Network Path?
A network path is the route that data takes as it travels from your device to a destination server across the internet. Instead of moving directly, data passes through multiple intermediate routers and networks, called hops, before reaching its destination. Each hop can introduce latency or packet loss, which affects overall connection performance.
A network path is the sequence of routers and network links that data travels through between your device and a destination server. Your data doesn't move in a straight line — it jumps in discrete steps, each router handing the packet off to the next one closer to its destination.

Each device in that chain is called a hop. A typical path across the internet contains anywhere from 5 to 20 hops, depending on geographic distance and how the networks involved are interconnected.
